Sweet Thing
The Ruby Throated Hummingbird
Coloured pen, coloured pencil and acrylic
The ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) is a fascinating creature.
Their hum is actually made by their rapid wing beats. They migrate great distances to follow the warmth, and are only found in the Americas. They also lay the world’s smallest eggs: the size of peas!
Says Nikki about this drawing: “ As a bird nerd, I’m used to being the only one around who is focused on spotting these fascinating creatures. Imagine my delight when, on a recent trip to California, my son spotted one – having previously only seen them in pictures! I was so proud as well as hopeful of having created another bird watcher.” The drawing is called Sweet Thing.
